Start with what you cannot change
Brick and stone are permanent. Trim and siding can be repainted; the roof cannot, for twenty-plus years. Choose the shingle against the masonry first and let paint follow.
Warm house, warm roof
Red, orange and tan brick generally want a warm-leaning shingle, weathered wood, driftwood, barkwood. Grey and white exteriors take cooler charcoals and slates. Mismatching the temperature is the most common regret we hear.
Does a light roof save energy in Georgia?
Slightly, but far less than homeowners expect, attic ventilation and insulation do far more for your summer bill than shingle color does. Choose the color you want to look at.
See it big, see it outside, see it twice
- Get full-size sample boards, not chips
- Hold them against the house, not in the driveway
- Look in morning light and again in late afternoon
- Look at installed roofs in your own neighborhood
- Check any HOA guidelines before you fall in love
Resale
Mid-tone, widely-used colors are the safe play if you may sell within a decade. Unusual colors can narrow the buyer pool on an item nobody wants to change.
