Spring: after storm season starts
- Walk the yard and look for shingle pieces or granules
- Look at the roof from the street for lifted or missing shingles
- Check ceilings and the attic for new stains
Summer: heat and ventilation
- Feel the attic on a hot afternoon. Extreme heat can mean poor ventilation
- Make sure soffit vents are not blocked by insulation
- Watch for curling or blistering shingles on sunny slopes
Fall: leaves and gutters
- Clean gutters and downspouts once the leaves drop
- Trim branches that hang over or rub the roof
- Check that downspouts move water away from the foundation
Winter: freezes and wind
- Look at valleys and eaves for standing water or debris
- Check pipe boots and flashing for cracks
- After high wind, scan for lifted shingles
