Warranty years vs. Georgia years
A shingle rated for decades is rated under laboratory conditions. Add sustained summer heat, high humidity, UV load and spring hail, and real-world service life in our area typically lands well short of the printed figure, especially on poorly ventilated roofs.
What extends a roof's life
- Balanced attic ventilation, the biggest single factor
- Correct nailing pattern and starter installation
- Gutters that actually move water off the roof edge
- Trimmed limbs and a canopy that is not dumping debris
- Small repairs handled before they soak the decking
What shortens it
- A hot, unvented attic
- Layering new shingles over old
- Standing water and debris in valleys
- Unrepaired storm damage aging in place
- Foot traffic from satellite installers and pressure washers
When to start planning
Get a free inspection at the fifteen-year mark even if nothing is wrong. Knowing you have five good years left is worth the hour it takes, and it beats finding out during a leak in February.
